Brad Strauss Answers the Kinship Questionnaire

The owner and director of bimco in Melbourne talks to us about his reluctance to pick favorites, his love of good systems and good tunes, and his number one rule for a better future in construction.

1. Coffee or tea?

Both! One coffee in the morning followed by many cups of tea. I love coffee, but I have my limit.

2. Novels or movies?

Movies about novels. If I go with a novel, it will be an audiobook. Then I can multitask – such as walking the dog and 'reading' a book.

3. Mountain or beach?

Two extremes and dependent on the season. I love hiking, so if I had to pick, it'd have to be mountains.

4. Favorite building?

Impossible to pick so I'll go local. Manchester Unity Building in Melbourne CBD.

5. Favorite city?

Most cities have their unique defining features. It is impossible to say, but I do love the interwoven culture, people, food and nightlife of Melbourne. If it wasn't so cold for half the year, it'd be sensational. I think San Francisco is pretty much that.

6. Which project are you most proud of (that you’re allowed to talk about)?

Automating and creating our back-end business operations systems.

7. What is your most treasured possession?

My son.

8. What’s your secret skill?

Packing everything into a suitcase, car, cupboard, or dishwasher when you wouldn't ever expect it to fit.

9. How would your colleagues describe you?

You can only hope they would say nice things... I'd like to think accommodating and approachable.

10. Which word or phrase do you most overuse?

Checking my latest training transcript, it seems I disproportionately use "so" a lot (34 times in 15 mins is pretty up there).

11. Where are you happiest?

Kicking back, having beers with mates on a sunny day in an outdoor bar with good tunes.

12. What helps you focus?

Headset and a pumping house tune.

13. Which habit would you most like to develop?

Calmness and cognitive clarity in tense and unpredictable situations

14. Greatest achievement?

Personal: Teaching my son to read before he started school.

Professional: Creating and growing a global business with a great reputation in the industry off our own backs (myself and my wife), with no external investment or capital.

15. What's missing from your LinkedIn profile?

Let me check... Okay, apparently I am not yet 'verified'. Better get onto that.

16. If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation to win back lost time commuting and be anywhere I want to be at a moment's notice.

17. If you could work remotely from anywhere in the world for a month, where would you choose?

This is possible for us but I don't want to be working when on holiday, which is the whole idea of a holiday. Let's go to the Maldives.

18. What is a mantra you try to live by?

Integrity.

19. Best piece of advice you’ve received?

"But hey, I'm just another guy with an opinion."

20. What's the best thing that could happen to you today?

Someone takes over all my work and I get to focus on other things.

Brad with Kinship CEO Gary Sprague in Hong Kong.

Custom-made gaming laptop connected to a ridiculously ultrawide 49-inch widescreen

23. If you could change one thing about Revit, what would it be?

Dated methodology and approach to creating and editing things, e.g. anything to do with parameters.

29. What's your idea of a perfect workday?

A day spent building new processes that make us more efficient.

30. Which historical figure would you bring back to life to have on your team at work? Why?

31. If you had to choose another profession, what would it be?

Building Asset Manager to reuse and reapply my skill set.

32. Which technology will have the biggest impact on construction in the years ahead?

I'm sure it'd be hard to disagree with Artificial Intelligence. Second, advanced just-in-time manufacturing.

Predetermined, well-refined standards, which are consistently applied.

34. If you could impose any rule or regulation for the construction industry, what would it be?
