A Little Bit of History

Born Erik Gunnar Asplund in Stockholm in 1885, the architect and designer is an acclaimed forefather of functionalist design in Sweden.

His early architectural works, such as the Stockholm Public Library – for which his Senna Chair was specifically designed – were informed by neoclassical style and emphasized simple forms and geometry.

It was in the later part of his life that he began to favour functionalism. He was appointed Chief Architect for the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition where he introduced modernism to Swedish society. His extension of what is now the Gothenburg Town Hall, carried out from 1913 to 1937, shows his transition from neoclassical architecture to functionalism.

Some of his best known furniture designs include the tubular steel Karmstol Side Chair for Nordiska Kompaniet, designed in 1931, and the Göteborg Chair, designed in 1934-37 and produced by Cassina from 1983. The Göteborg chair's solid wood design represents the architect's concept of functionalism and was designed for his extension of the Gothenburg Town Hall.

Chair Details

Our Revit family has 6 types defined by the upholstery finishes and frame material. Created from fully native Revit geometry, the model has three levels of detail to provide appropriate views at different scales. As with all of our seating families, the chair uses 2D geometry in plan view to facilitate a fast workflow when designing room layouts.

Andy for Context

We've updated Andy, our entourage family, for the Göteborg chair. The version in this collection has specific types to be used for this collection to suit the chair height. He is also now reading Landscapes and Buildings by Erik Gunnar Asplund.
