Data Centers: Fire Suppression – Water Mist

A collection of Revit families for a water mist fire suppression system for data centers. Developed in partnership with industry expert Global Technia Consulting.

Our next series of free Revit content focuses on data centers and the specialized building services they require. These include the MEP systems for HVAC and fire protection, which are critical to a stable and secure data center. What lighting, windows and furniture are to the quality of a commercial building, MEP systems are to a data center.

Within a project's BIM models, these MEP systems are needed for several key purposes – design coordination, energy and performance analytics, quantities and costing. But doing so requires having good content – both accurate visual representation and comprehensive technical data.

If you have quality BIM content for your HVAC and fire protection systems, you'll be halfway to delivering a successful data center project. We hope these collections help to get you there.

Water Mist Fire Suppression System

This week's data center collection contains Revit content for a fire suppression system. There are various types of fire suppression systems such as gas suppression, standard sprinkler systems, and low and high water mist suppression. Further variations also exist depending on the agents used.

This collection is for a water mist system with a high pressure pump, water filter, sprinkler head adaptors and high pressure sprinkler heads for high level and below floor spaces.

High Pressure Pump

The collection contains a SEM-SAFE high pressure water mist pump from Danfoss. The Revit family has a cat5 tank and comes with 16 types defined by the pump output and tank size. Created using only native Revit geometry, the family has three levels of detail to provide appropriate views at different scales.

Sprinkler Heads

We've also included a set of sprinkler heads from Danfoss that are designed for use in data centers. We created two non-hosted families for high level and below floor applications, along with a third face-based sprinkler head that can be used at high level within a ceiling.

Ancillaries

Lastly, the collection contains a series of pipe adaptors and a water filter, also from Danfoss.

The pipe adaptors are meant to be used specifically with the sprinkler heads and allow for using the nozzles with 8mm or 10mm threaded pipework, as well as with 12mm compression pipework.

The in-line high pressure water filter comes with two types for 300 and 1000 L/min flow rates.

Helpful Data for BIM

At Kinship, we often find that manufacturer BIM content suffers from an excess of parameter data. Content gets filled with information that's of little or no use within an actual project. However, it's important that Revit families like these contain the necessary information for both the engineer and coordinator.

The high pressure pump has all the electrical and mechanical parameters needed for calculations in Revit systems. The pump also contains clearance zones to ensure that its placement allows for maintenance and construction and avoids any clashes on site.

All of our sprinkler heads utilize the manufacturer's K-Factor (K coefficients) to drive pressure drops within the pipe connector. The pipe accessories and sprinkler also include maximum flow rates, maximum pressures and release temperatures for the sprinkler heads.
